Review on Bluetooth ELM327 Scanner Inner Parts

I’m not into cars to such an extent that I have an OBD-II analyzer in my toolkit. But when I discovered Chinese sources for $9-$20 USB & Bluetooth adapters, I couldn’t say no.
Actually, my search for OBD capability was inspired by a persistent check-engine idiot light (spoiler: it was only a cylinder misfire – something I could have already told you before the light ever came on!). I found that the usual Chinese sources carried many wired & wireless adapters, and I ended up getting this adapter from obdii365.com I knew it might not work, but it had good reviews, and I wasn’t risking much.
Sure enough, it did work – well enough at least to report the misfire code and let me turn off the engine light. Then, curiosity got the better of me, and I had to see what was inside. I’ll leave it to an enterprising reader to figure out the BOM cost. How can they make it so cheaply?
Here’s the dongle – it doesn’t know what’s about to hit it. The LEDs do activate when the device is in use, but it’s not clear if they have specific meanings. LEDless dongles of about 1/3 the size are also available.
elm327-bluetooth-inner-parts-1
I thought it might have one of those easy-to-snap-together, hard-to-unsnap cases, but no, I found the screws.
elm327-bluetooth-inner-parts-2
A look at the guts – the overall quality is surprisingly high:
elm327-bluetooth-inner-parts-3
Looking at what I’ll call the underside of the board reveals a Microchip MCP2551 CAN transceiver, a 4MHz crystal, an Advanced Monolithic Systems AMS1117 3.3V LDO in the upper-left (ever heard of them? I assume this is the same as an LT1117), five LEDs along the top, and a 78M05 5V regulator at the lower-left. The two diodes to the right of the regulator made me think of varactors for some reason, but a code lookup shows they are probably 6.8V Zeners.
elm327-bluetooth-inner-parts-4
The quality of soldering and general manufacture is excellent. The only flux residue on this side of the board is from a 3-lead through-hole component, which brings us to the topside:
elm327-bluetooth-inner-parts-5
Now things get interesting, though let’s start with the mundane. The through-hole TO-92 is a good old LM317 regulator. The two connectors did not “flow” into alignment very well, even though they have their “ears” soldered to the board. I’ll guess that the unpopulated chip is for a serial-to-USB converter for a wired version of the board. The big chip is a PIC18F25K80 — not too shabby a part, with 32K flash, 3.5K RAM, 1K data EEPROM, CAN, 12-bit ADC, 16MIPS, etc. It alone is worth about $2 in decent quantity!
That leaves the very badly soldered Bluetooth module, blue soldermask and all. The top three contacts on the left edge aren’t even soldered! Are they supposed to be? I could compare it to the original unit I bought (I haven’t actually tried this one).
The chips on the Bluetooth module comprise an FM24C64, which I assumed was just a common 64Kb EEPROM, but actually appears to be a more exotic FRAM! That’s the first FRAM I’ve seen in the wild. The chip to the right of the FRAM has me stumped. Let us know if you can figure it out. But the IC at the lower-right is an RDA Microelectronics RDA5869 Bluetooth SoC, a 55nm design with an ARM7 µC.
Many of the components have this year’s date code, so production is current. I get the impression the firmware in these cheap units might actually be…ahem…borrowed from an original design, and I don’t know how well it works with the range of car models and years sporting OBD-II, but it did what I needed for my 1998 Toyota.
If you already have a USB OBD-II dongle you like, yet find Bluetooth appealing, check out avrnoob’s Bluetooth hack, and also his power booster!

BMW X1 F48 Coding with Vgate iCar 2+BimmerCode+BimmerLink

Here I have something want to share with you guys, about BMW hidden features esp. X1 F48 coding at the lowest price. 20 usd (a vgate icar 2 adapter) helps me with all coding.
Enabling hidden features at the consumer level is mainly meant to improve Comfort / Convenience and maybe, to activate a few other cool stuff. It is important that the engine / drivetrain parameters are left untouched unless one is trained to do so. It is prudence to limit Coding only to activate the important features that make our life easy on the day to day basis and not to keep meddling with it on a regular basis. As we are just changing the status of the stock features, the changes made are only over-written in the registry. Coding as we do with the BimmerCode does not add lines to the programme and therefore, the checksum or the coding registration should not change. This is similar to selecting options from the iDrive Infotainment system, except that they are not directly accessible.
Hardware remains the same without any changes; it is only that their default status change and that anyway can be altered by the user ON-THE-GO. There is no way this can have any adverse effect on the car as a whole and therefore, denying warranty is not justifiable. However, preserving a copy of the stock setup file can prove invaluable at times.
BimmerCode:
The App allows coding of BMW cars and has 2 stages; the first being the simple / straight forward one, which covers the most common features, that too in English. This is sufficient for most purpose. The second being an advanced one, needs in-depth knowledge and unfortunately is in German language; therefore, best avoided unless one can understand German language and knows exactly what he /she is up to. The app saves a copy of the log file every time it scans. This can be exported to an iMac through iTunes for later use.
It is a good practice to check error logs through BimmerLink before attempting any changes. This can serve as a reference for future too. It is important to keep the slate clean after every session and therefore, investing on both BimmerCode and BimmerLink makes sense; BimmerCode is used to make changes to the default status of the features and BimmerLink is used to check / clear errors if any.
It is good to turn-on Airplane mode and enable only Wi-Fi connection before starting the activity. This will avoid any calls / messages interrupting the activity itself which can stall communication.
It is recommended to keep the Engine off with the ignition turned-on during the activity. As the modules are reset after applying the changes to the registry, the engine will be turned off. This can create a tense situation un-necessarily.
As the modules are reset during the process, there can be communication drop between modules which can throw-up errors. These errors are automatically erased during the end stages of coding. However, after the coding activity, it is good to manually check for errors through BimmerLink and erase them if needed.
It is best to code features pertaining to one module at a time and verify the results before attempting another module. Some modules which are a combination of analog and digital components will be slower in communication. Therefore, for modules such as Infotainment system, Speedo-Combo, etc. slow communication needs to be selected under settings.
App can be downloaded for free and verified in the Demo mode before purchasing / unlocking the same for coding. Quick start guide and FAQ including the list of supported cars and the options available are all available within the app too.
Make sure that the Mobile battery is fully charged and plan ahead to complete the coding activity within 15-20 minutes so that the car battery does not drain. It is a good practice to keep all accessories switched off during the activity.

vgate-icar2-bmw-coding-4
BimmerLink:
A must have for reading and clearing errors. I would not recommend coding without having this app, as it is very important to clear errors if any, after the activity. This will also help as a future reference. The app also has features to display sensor values, control exhaust flap, along with the provision to have required parameters to be displayed as a dashboard. I am yet to check these features as everything is in German; will update as and when I figure out something!
vgate-icar2-bmw-coding-5
Vgate iCar2 Wifi OBD2 adapter:
It was available with me came in handy. I downloaded both BimmerCode and BimmerLink apps from Apple Store for approximately Rs.2100 each. Wi-Fi dongle worked fine with communication speed similar to that I have experienced with the VCDS.
Vgate iCar2 Wifi OBD2 adapter:
BimmerCode & BimmerLink:
But honestly, I miss VCDS; wish Ross-Tech had their product covered for BMW too.
Features that I could successfully code:
1. Auto Start/Stop system OFF by default
2. Auto fold/unfold ORVM with lock/unlock
Indian variant X1 F48 does not have the hardware pertaining to the front passenger seat belt reminder!! Therefore this non-existing feature can-not be activated!! Crap!!
Of-late, BMW has hard-coded lane change indicator cycle selector. Therefore this can-not be accessed for coding. Choice through Infotainment system is only between 1 and 3 cycles.
Auto Handbrake activation is not possible through BimmerCode. Have to try my luck elsewhere. I read somewhere on the net that this is possible through E-Sys.
I will be glad to support fellow BHPians in Bangalore to activate these features if they need / interested. It will be nice if someone has Carly or the E-Sys in Bangalore, so that they can be compared. Maybe, they can activate a couple of things that the BimmerCode couldn’t.
Thanks for reading!

When we compare the android app development process of the OBD2 apps we’ve reviewed so far, the OBDeleven app has the edge over all of them. Aside from giving you a clear view of all the parameters from your car’s ECU, OBD2 goes one step ahead to include a “One Click App” that you can use to control multiple car options with just a click of a button.

OBDeleven

The only thing you should worry about with OBDeleven is that you will need a good network connection to enjoy the One Click App feature. You will also need a Premium upgrade to get access to more exciting car tracking tools. Aside from these barriers, the app is a helpful tool for car reviews and is used by many enthusiasts and mechanics.

Pros

  • Supports reading and clearing of all diagnostic trouble codes from your ECU
  • Multiple language support
  • Has active social media community
  • Offers car battery analyzer unlike some apps
  • Manuals containing DIY car fixes

ScanMaster

ELM327 OBD2 Scanner with HS MS CAN Switch FAQS

ELM327 (Bluetooth, USB, WiFi) Scanner with HS MS CAN Switch FAQS

Question: Answer: Notes:
It will initiate and establish a connection to the vehicle, but it disconnect. Check general settings of the FORScan. If a specific COM port and/or baud rate is set, change all settings to “Auto” and try to connect again.

If the above doesn’t help, you need to find out if the problem is related to FORScan, or it is a general problem of the ELM device. The best way is to try any another OBD2 software. If another software works fine with ELM, the problem is related to FORScan and should be addressed to developers.

FORScan related troubleshooting
On your website, you only have drivers for the USB version and not the Bluetooth Version. On the website, drivers are only required for the USB interfaces. Normally you don’t need any additional drivers if your PC is already Bluetooth enabled. You just need to pair the Bluetooth from your PC, then proceed to start the software.
I can’t get the scanner to connect to my LG Tablet (Android) with ForScan Are you having trouble pairing the Bluetooth connection from the scanner to your tablet? Or connecting to the vehicle itself with ForScan?
My devices can’t find the scanner. I’ve tired my LG Tablet, Windows Surface Tablet and my Android Phone. The software loads but indicates there is no scanner available.

I have another scanner that links with all 3 devices using Torque App

The issue may be that because you tried another Bluetooth scanner with ForScan, it’s automatically selected that Bluetooth scanner. Within the connection settings, you will need to select this ELM327 Scanner with Switch. If not, the app will not detect the Bluetooth scanner that is currently paired. This also applies to any other App such as Torque. Please let me know if this helped.
How do I use the MS/HS Switch?
Which direction is HS and MS CAN?
Switch Instructions: The HS/MS CAN switch direction (when looking at the front side of the scanner):

Toggle Switch Up : HS CAN
Toggle Switch Down: MS CAN

You will know if its set to HS or MS when it’s connected to the software and if the vehicle connected requires HS/MS CAN to communicate.

When FORScan establishes a vehicle connection, it analyses the vehicle configuration. If MS CAN modules are expected, FORScan will ask user about HS/MS CAN switch and ask you to confirm. If it’s in the normal (off position), it will just ask you to turn it on.

If no question is asked, it means FORScan doesn’t expect a presence of MS CAN and is not going to look for it. If user confirms the MS/HS switch presence, FORScan will ask user to move the switch position

No ELM found. Please check connection and try again. This error is displayed if the FORScan cannot find any ELM device. 1. Please make sure that your ELM327-based device is physcially connected to your laptop and vehicle. Also check LEDs on the front panel of the ELM device.

Unable to initialize the application. Please reinstall. This error means that the application’s integrity was broken, for example, user deleted some important files by mistake. You need to reinstall the application. FORScan related troubleshooting

How to Setup WiFi ELM327 OBD2 Scanner on Android & iOS Devices

What you need:

  • ELM327 Wi-Fi OBD2 Scanner
  • Apple iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod) or Android Device (Phone or Tablet)
  • Car Diagnostic App for Android or iOS
  • SAFETY WARNING: Never start and run your engine inside of a closed garage. Always make sure there is good ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide fumes are produced by your engine’s exhaust gases.

1. Locate your car’s OBDII diagnostic port and plug in your scanner. The location will vary on each car, but it’s usually found within arm’s reach under the driver’s side dashboard, under the steering wheel.

2. Turn on your ignition by turning your key to the 2nd turn. The engine will be off, but this provides power to your dash lights, radio and also the OBDII diagnostic port.

On your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, go to Settings, then Wi-Fi and connect to the scanner’s Wi-Fi signal. This is done in the same manner as connecting to your home WiFi Network.

The name of the scanner will vary depending on the model: Examples would be OBDII, OBD-II, VLink, ELM327, OBD2, etc

Password (if needed): 12345678

3. Start your engine. Although the OBDII port is providing power to the scanner, in some cases you will not be able to retrieve any engine data without the engine running.

4. Open your preferred app. I will use the Torque app as an example. Go to the Settings page by pressing the Menu button on your device. Then go to “OBD2 Adapter Settings”, then “Choose Device”, and then select the connected WiFi Scanner. This step is critical because the App won’t know to detect the ELM327 Scanner and it won’t connect to the ECU!

5. Go back to the App’s main menu and it will begin establishing a connection with the scanner. All 4 icons will be solid blue when it’s connected (Torque).

If you cannot find the Scanner’s WiFi signal in Wireless Settings:

  • Make sure the scanner is plugged into the OBDII Port and ignition is on
  • Turn off your phone’s Wi-Fi in the settings and turn it back on
  • Unplug and plug in the Scanner from the OBDII port, then find the WiFi Signal

If you can connect to the WiFi signal, but cannot connect within the App:

  • Make sure the connection is configured within the App’s settings. The IP should be192.168.0.10 and the Port is 35000
  • In the iPhone settings, touch the blue arrow on the WiFi connection. By default, it will connect to the DHCP settings. Set it to Static and enter the IP Address “192.168.0.10”and Subnet Mask to “255.255.255.0”. Try again within the App.
  • Make sure the paired OBD2 scanner is selected within the app’s settings if it won’t connect (see step 4)
